Dr Kumar Katya
Senior Researcher, FishPLUS
Dr Kumar Katya joined the FishPLUS team in 2015 as a Nutritionist / Senior Researcher, with expertise spanning across multiple research areas: from designing new feed and formulation, identification of promising feed ingredients and additives, immunostimulants, conducting feeding trials, analysis (in vitro, in vivo, data), new business and project management.

Dr Kumar obtained his PhD in Aquaculture Nutrition from Pukyong National University, Busan, South Korea. Prior to joining CFF, he had years of experience working with multinational feed/additive companies, including Novus (USA) and EWOS (Canada). He actively reviews and edits scientific papers for a number of journals, such as Aquaculture Research, World Aquaculture Society, Fisheries & Aquatic Science and International Aquatic Research. He has also contributed in organising conferences and workshops on the theme of nutrition, aquaculture and aquafeed funded by aquaculture societies (WAS, Asian Fisheries Society), private companies and organisations.

Dr Kumar and team managed to grow Black Soldier Fly larvae derived from underutlised crops and use the insect meal to substantially replace fish meal in marine fish feeds. This project was conducted under the Newton-Ungku Omar Fund – Insect and Underutlised Crops Aquafeed Project (IUCAP), which was funded by the British Council and MIGHT, Malaysia. The innovative idea was duly recognised as FishPLUS recently managed to secure a project grant from the International Foundation for Science to develop sustainable aquaculture feed to mitigate the effects of climate change on tilapia aquaculture in Southeast Asia.
